White as Snow

When we arrived at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina, everything was already beautiful. Giant tree trunks line a gentle rolling river. Bald hills empty onto long flat corn fields. Colors vary from blacks to pale browns and every shade of green. When we woke up the next morning, everything had changed. We saw only one color: white. About three inches of snow had fallen unexpectedly during the night and continued piling up throughout the day. What before had been a wonderful mixture was now united in one pure landscape. Every dead twig on the ground, every tree branch, fence post, and blade of grass were now the same.

God promises to cover and unite us in a similar way. “Though your sins are as scarlet, They will be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They will be like wool” (Isaiah 1:18). Much like snow covering the ground of the forest, God offers to cover all of our shortcomings, sins, and selfishness with a purity and beauty. How? By clothing us with a righteousness not our own – that of Jesus. “[N]ot having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith” (Philippians 3:9). Have you been covered with the righteousness of Christ? Are you rejoicing in the beauty and purity you have been given?
