Ever since I was a little boy, barbers and hair-stylists have cut my hair with clippers and scissors. They put a cape around my shoulders and go to work. When they finish cutting, they take a brush and sweep my neck and shoulders. The hair falls onto the floor. A broom sweeps the hair into a dust pan which carries it to the trash can. Hair that was a living, growing part of me, is just discarded. It’s never going to be useful for anything again.
Jesus says that people must remain connected to maintain life. Like hair, unless people are connected to their source of life, they become useless. “I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in Me, he is thrown away as a branch and dries up; and they gather them, and cast them into the fire and they are burned” (John 15:5-6). How sad, to think of a person who contributes nothing good to the world. But how exciting to think of being allowed to serve an important role in God’s plan, to bear good fruit in the lives of other people!
What is your connection to Jesus? How do you connect with him? In verse 7, Jesus said, “If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.” Abiding in Christ – being connected to the Vine – means following his Word and letting his Word live inside you. When his Word lives in you, the power of God provides everything you need!
