Frustrated: how do you react to being frustrated?
Habakkuk – eternal – still just as timely

I. Habakkuk Is Frustrated
A. 1:2 How long O Lord – you will not hear
1. 1:3 why make me see iniquity
a. destruction and violence
b. strife and contention
2. 1:4 law is ignored, justice not upheld
a. wicked surround righteous
b. justice perverted
B. God has a plan
1. 2:2 record vision, write it, hastens toward goal
a. Seem like God is slow?
b. Only see it in his Word
2. God will plan execute in his own time
3. 1:5-6 you wouldn’t believe it
a. raising up Chaldeans
b. If God told you wouldn’t understand
c. Be more scared if you did
4. 1:11 sweep through like the wind
a. they will be held guilty
C. Jesus is king right now – on throne – present reality
1. Re 1:5 Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth.
2. “thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth”
3. Nobody is frustrated there – like God intends it
4. Long for heaven = frustrated here
5. live our lives kingdom down, not culture up
6. change behavior to align w/ kingdom
7. all politics are disappointing b/c not kingdom

1. 1:12 appointed them to judge?
2. 1:13 you are too pure, can’t look on wickedness

II. Sinful Responses to Corrupt Cultures
A. I am my own king
1. 2:4 Pride – soul is not right
2. Not going to follow culture or God’s word
3. Set up my own life – I don’t need a kingdom or culture – rule from my own throne
B. I am my own savior
1. 2:5 wine betrays haughty
2. enlarges appetite like Sheol – never satisfied
3. Everything is bleak, I don’t think God will take care of me, but I will take care of myself
4. Never at rest – must be on job day and night
a. Stressed, depressed, exhausted
5. God is on job day and night
C. Greed – corruption presents opportunity
1. 2:6 woe to him who increases what is not his
a. 2:8 looted many nations
2. Dr. who moved to Colorado to sell marijuana
D. Spiritual corruption
1. 2:18-20 what profit is idol, teacher of falsehood
a. Lord is in his holy temple
2. false teaching, false worship
3. More evolved = new insight
4. Bring kingdom to culture = fierce resistance
a. Let me tell you about fornication
5. Surrender certain issues, beliefs not worth fight
E. How does God not firebomb the whole world?

III. Patient Faith in a Corrupt Culture
A. 2:4 The righteous will live by faith
1. Small–one of most important ideas in history
2. Ro 1:16–17 For I am not ashamed of the
3. Ga 3:11 Now that no one is justified by the Law before God is evident; for, “The righteous man shall live by faith.”
B. Trusting what you read in word until see in world
1. God promises, but I can’t see it
2. Faith is bridge over that chasm of difference
C. Take testimony of someone else
1. Heb 10:38–11:1 But My righteous one shall live by faith; And if he shrinks back, My soul has no pleasure in him. 39But we are not of those who shrink back to destruction, but of those who have faith to the preserving of the soul. 11:1Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
D. Faith Is Contrasted With Sight
1. 11:1 conviction of things not seen
a. 11:3 by faith we understand worlds created by word of God
b. not there – don’t know unless he told us
2. Skeptic says “I’ll believe it when I see it”
a. Faithful says “I’ll believe until I see it”
3. God knows every hair on your head, every day of your life, every longing of your heart
4. healed sick, lame, raised dead, is God, resurrection – trust witnesses = that’s faith
E. Things that haven’t happened yet
1. He 11:1 assurance of things hoped for
2. He 10:38 if he shrinks back – no pleasure in him
3. sick made well, lame will run, tears wiped away
a. won’t need armies, police, first responders
4. Sin, suffering, Satan will be gone
a. Not yet – so we get frustrated
5. OT people waited for messiah
6. All promises kept – will keep future promises
F. Faith is completely dependent on Word of God
1. When you stop reading, faith starts to die
2. Doesn’t mean everything will be ok, but you will
G. Trust what God says – wait to see what God does
1. Believe light coming while advancing in dark
2. Not frustrated with God – frustration to God
3. Allowing God to be your lightning rod so you don’t explode and destroy other people
